Bags, Slippers Made from Water Lilies

Growing in abundance in the rivers of Vigan, water lilies clog the rivers and cause it to overflow. However, this “aquatic nuisance” is filled with promise.

Under the watch of Punong Barangay Larry Raboy of barangay Pantay Fatima, residents of the barangay managed the growth of water lilies which were used in making handicraft products like traditional bags (bayong), baskets, placemats, slippers, among others.

Aside from cleaning the river to help avert flooding, residents of Pantay Fatima has found a good source of income, particularly women who cannot leave their homes because they need to tend the house and look after their children. The residents are silently helping our government fight poverty and protect the environment.

This livelihood thechnology was borrowed from the Villar Foundation, it was acclaimed the Best Water Management Practice in 2011 for its “Sagip Ilog” cleanup of the Las Piñas Zapote River.
